ALL SOAC TRAINING, COMPETITION AND GATHERINGS HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED UNTIL MARCH 31ST DUE TO CONCERNS WITH THE SPREAD OF THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19). PLEASE SEE THE MESSAGE BELOW FROM THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS PA PRESIDENT & CEO, MATTHEW AARON.

Due to recent developments tied to the global spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), including a case tied to a U.S. Special Olympics athlete, and the heightened risks for people with intellectual disabilities and the elderly, Special Olympics Pennsylvania is suspending all sport training and competition activities and other activations involving our athletes (such as Athlete Leadership University, dances, or end of season parties) through 31 March 2020, at which time the situation will be reevaluated.  This decision was made carefully based on advice received from Special Olympics, Inc. after they consulted with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and reviewed the latest guidance from the World Health Organization.

State and local fundraising events and other events that do not include Special Olympics athletes may proceed in unaffected areas so long as staff and/or local Program organizers carefully assess the risk in collaboration with their local or state health agencies.  For local Programs located in affected areas (currently Area P, Delaware, Monroe, and Montgomery), all such proposed events must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis with the state office.  Please share event details with our Chief Development Officer, Tim Kerrihard, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  He will review and also engage other members of the staff team as appropriate.  Depending on disposition of each case (proceed as planned, proceed with modifications, postpone, or cancel), our marketing team will assist in communicating appropriate messages to all stakeholders.

We are currently planning to proceed with all scheduled training schools in non-affected areas.  However, the multi-sport training school scheduled for March 22nd in Plymouth Meeting (Montgomery County) is postponed.

Because our school partners primarily manage Unified Champion School events, we will work collaboratively with them to evaluate school-based UCS activities.  However, we have decided to postpone our upcoming state Interscholastic Unified Sports Bocce Championship scheduled for March 18 – 19, 2020.

As this is a rapidly evolving situation, this guidance may be updated at any time.  Staff and volunteers are asked and expected to utilize good judgment when determining if or how to proceed with activities as not all possible situations or scenarios can be anticipated or covered by this guidance.  However, in no case are volunteers or staff permitted to proceed with activities or events otherwise prohibited by this guidance.

If you have questions about events not involving Special Olympics athletes such as fundraisers, please direct them to Tim Kerrihard at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  All other questions should be directed to Clare Walsh Miller, Chief Program Officer, at This email address is being protected from spambots. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this constantly changing environment and strive to make the best possible decisions with the safety and well-being of our athletes and all constituents at the forefront.
